ABSTRACT

There is an enormous diversity of children with surgical conditions, from the sick premature infant who needs resuscitation and laparotomy to the chronically ill adolescent undergoing colonic resection for inflammatory bowel disease. There is also a considerable caseload of normal children who require anaesthesia for very common surgery such as hernia repair, orchidopexy and circumcision. This chapter covers the practical aspects of neonatal and paediatric anaesthesia under the headings general principles for elective and emergency surgery (including laparoscopy), common operations in neonates and infants, abdominal surgery, urological surgery and oncological surgery.
