ABSTRACT
The chapter outlines the evolution of paediatric services in the UK over the last 150 years and is intended to provide a context for the development of surgical and anaesthetic services for children generally. The current recommendations for organisation of services will be discussed, in relation to the UK paediatric anaesthetic service, together with a brief description of that in other healthcare systems.
