ABSTRACT

There is a variety of reasons why patients with advanced disease may be disorientated or act strangely (Table 4.5.1). There is often considerable uncertainty surrounding the assessment and management of disturbed or disorientated patients. This chapter emphasizes the importance of making a clear assessment leading to a diagnosis. It first discusses the clinical syndromes of delirium and dementia, before describing three common presentations and going on to discuss the cognitive assessment and key aspects of management.
