ABSTRACT
At the very end of life, the needs of patients tend to converge. Conscious level diminishes, preventing explicit communication; swallowing deteriorates, necessitating a change away from oral medication for most people; and symptom control becomes concerned with a small number of key issues:
• pain
• retained bronchial secretions
• agitation,
and sometimes:
• nausea and vomiting
• breathlessness.
