ABSTRACT
Normal functional endometrium has a generally smooth, homogeneous and non-vascular appearance. The phases of the menstrual cycle can be differentiated with experience:
• Menstrual. The endometrium may be thin if menstruation is nearly completed, or have a patchy reddened ‘shaggy’ appearance caused by irregular endometrial sloughing. Blood and menstrual debris frequently obscure visualization.
