ABSTRACT

These tests are often complementary rather than competing testing modalities. However, one should always consider carefully the additional information afforded by additional or alternative tests.

ULTRASOUND

Pelvic ultrasound is widely practised, safe and acceptable to women. The advent of TVS has allowed high-resolution imaging of the uterus and surrounding pelvic structures. The most likely positive finding will be uterine fibroids as they are found in at least 25 per cent of the general adult female population and are estimated to be associated with menorrhagia in 30-50 per cent of cases. Ultrasound can detect, measure and localize fibroids with a high degree of accuracy.
