ABSTRACT

In general, blind uterine instrumentation (‘sounding’) should be avoided in modern gynaecology. However, gentle introduction of a metal sound or graded miniature biopsy catheter (if a preceding endometrial sample is indicated) allows the size and direction of the uterine cavity to be determined. The device is fitted (see Information Box 13.3) while gentle counter-traction is applied on the cervix. Remove all ancillary instruments and remove any collected blood from the vagina. Gentle pressure on the cervix is occasionally required to stem any bleeding from cervical puncture by the tenaculum. Simple analgesics are recommended for any postinsertion abdominal pain. Information Box 13.4 gives additional tips for fitting success.
