ABSTRACT

It is unlikely that the increased endometrial surface area caused by the presence of polyps causes excessive menstrual blood loss. However, different expression of sex steroid receptors in the endometrium overlying polyps may result in light, unscheduled bleeding (‘spotting’) and vaginal discharge, or heavier bleeding if hyperplastic or malignant. The presence of endometrial polyps is frequently found in association with unscheduled bleeding on HRT or tamoxifen and can be a cause of postmenopausal blood loss.
