ABSTRACT

Technological advances have facilitated endometrial ablation in non-anaesthetized patients in an outpatient setting. This development has enabled comprehensive ‘menorrhagia’ clinics based on a hysteroscopy service to be set up in order to diagnose and treat menstrual disorders efficiently. Inpatient operating can be restricted to hysterectomy or major myomectomy. This chapter describes the rationale and evidence for use of these new endometrial auto-ablative systems along with relevant technical and clinical aspects in the context of an outpatient hysteroscopy service. An example of a successful outpatient approach is given and where necessary the preceding chapters on management of menorrhagia, service delivery and pain control should be consulted.
