ABSTRACT
The common syndromes of central nervous system (CNS) infection are meningitis, when inflammation is confined to the subarachnoid space and meninges, and encephalitis, where the brunt of the inflammation is borne by the brain itself. Some features of the other frequently accompany either syndrome but for ease of discussion they are usually considered as separate entities.
