ABSTRACT

Neurological disorders in childhood fall into two broad groups: those in which there is a disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nervous system development, which may be genetically driven or result from an insult in fetal life; and those in which there is an acquired abnormality after initially normal development, such as occurs with neurodegenerative disorders or following brain infection or other injury. An awareness of normal processes in terms of anatomical, neurological and developmental milestones is a crucial part of paediatric practice.
