ABSTRACT
In this first of four chapters on cutaneous melanoma, its general features will be outlined. The histological spectrum of melanoma is discussed in more detail and its subtypes are reviewed in Chapter 10. That chapter concludes with a discussion of melanoma as simulator of other neoplasms. Chapter 11 is devoted to cytological diagnosis of melanoma, and Chapter 12 deals with prognostic factors, with emphasis on those assessed by the pathologist.
