ABSTRACT
Duplex ultrasound scans performed by well-trained practitioners are quick, relatively inexpensive, non-invasive and accurate. Investigation should be reserved for patients with reasonably severe disability or where a diagnosis is not clear. In many centres, duplex scanning has replaced arteriography as the initial investigation for patients being considered for operation.
