ABSTRACT

Suturing is used across all medical specialties and is a skill that every trainee should acquire. In this chapter we will:

one-handed knot tying ● Outline some principles of assisting the surgeon.

The body goes through four phases in response to a penetrating injury: haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and maturation (Table 6.1). It is important to appreciate that there may be considerable overlap between these phases, as wound healing is a dynamic process. The time-scale for repair depends on the type and site of the wound, and whether there are additional complicating factors such as the presence of co-morbidity.
