ABSTRACT
Referral for surgical procedures may come from many sources, most usually general practitioners, physicians, the emergency department or from other hospitals. Any patient who requires a surgical procedure will need to undergo a preoperative assessment. For elective (planned) procedures, this assessment aims to ensure that the patient’s health is optimized before surgery. Emergency patients also require preoperative assessment, but on a more rapid time-scale (Box 1.1).
