ABSTRACT

To put it another way, we need to apply the principles of homeostasis, which loom so large in general physiology, not just to the milieu intérieur but to the outside world as well. In addition to internal homeostasis, controlled by hormones and the autonomic nervous system (ANS), we have to add external homeostasis, controlled by the brain, achieved sometimes by literally altering our

environment (wearing a pullover, for instance), but more often by moving to somewhere nicer, or by engulfing or penetrating things we like.
