ABSTRACT
Nasogastric decompression and intravenous fluids are continued during the period of postoperative ileus. Blood glucose levels are closely monitored postoperatively and soluble insulin administered as required. Rebound transient hyperglycemia is common in the early postoperative period. Occasionally, more prolonged use of small amounts of insulin is required, but adaptation usually occurs within 3-6 months.
