ABSTRACT

The newborn baby tolerates operative intervention all the better after a few hours of preoperative preparation, especially if the diagnosis has been delayed. In general, this preparation should pay particular attention to hypothermia, hypoxia, hypovolemia, hypoglycemia and hypo-prothrombinemia. The operation should not be delayed unduly as there is always a danger of further infarction of the bowel, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and increased risk of infection.
