ABSTRACT

Congenital cysts and sinuses of the neck often result from persistence of remnants of embryological structures into postnatal life. These include cartilaginous structures of the cartilaginous skeleton, branchial cleft remnants and thyroglossal duct cysts. These anomalies rarely produce symptoms during the neonatal period. Sinuses and cartilaginous remnants are seen in infants, but cysts usually do not appear until later in childhood.
