ABSTRACT

Norway, Finland and Sweden are countries characterised by widely varying regional population densities, which has implications for the organisation of vascular surgical services. That is less true of Denmark where the population is more evenly distributed. Another Scandinavian feature is the ageing population: in Denmark on New Year’s Day 2001, 1.06 million (19.8 per cent) were over 60 years of age with a projected increase of 18.5 per cent to 1.25 million by 2010. The corresponding figures for those over 65 years of age in Finland are 0.77 rising to 0.90 million by 2010 and 1.35 million by 2030. Table 9B.1 presents selected data on demographics and organisation of vascular registries.
