ABSTRACT

A 75-year-old male with a long history of lumbar spinal and hip arthritis presents with sudden severe back pain, BP 100/50 mmHg, pulse 105/min.

E Abdominal aortic aneurysms are asymptomatic in most patients and often found incidentally. Sudden-onset severe back pain could prove an important early warning of an impending potentially catastrophic complication especially if new or different. Tachycardia and hypotension may suggest a contained leak. Emergency intravenous contrast CT is the investigation of choice in this setting.
