ABSTRACT
Introduction During tumor initiation, cells often become hypoxic and under these conditions, cancer cells activate signaling pathways, which regulate metabolism, proliferation, angiogenesis and death. This adaptation of tumor cells to hypoxia contributes to the malignant phenotype and to aggressive tumor progression, and low oxygen tension in tumors is associated with increased metastasis and poor survival of patients with several forms of tumor.
