ABSTRACT

Career pathways The career pathways within hospital medicine have changed substantially over the last 10 years, and continue to change. The details may therefore be slightly different by the time you graduate. Following graduation, you will be required to undergo two years of foundation training (F1 and F2). These are highly structured programmes with specific training objectives and regular appraisals. Following this, those choosing a career in hospital medicine will have to enter a specialist training programme. Currently, this is represented by the Specialist Registrar training programme but most specialties are likely to require additional training before the equivalent of the Specialist Registrar grade is attained. Entry into specialist training will be by open competition, usually in the form of a job application form and interview. At the end of specialist training (about 5 years), you will be qualified to enter the Specialist Register and apply for a consultant post.
