ABSTRACT
The placenta is usually regarded as a fetal organ, although it contains adjacent maternal and fetal vascular beds. It receives the highest blood flow of any fetal organ (40 per cent of fetal cardiac output) and towards the end of pregnancy competes with the fetus for maternal nutrients, consuming the major fraction of glucose and oxygen taken up by the pregnant uterus.
