ABSTRACT

Pneumonia and influenza remain among the top causes of death in most industrialized countries, in spite of all that has been done in the last 100 years to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases.1 Even with early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, many people, especially the elderly, will die of pneumonia or complications of influenza. Even those who survive may have prolonged recovery periods or other complications. Therefore, preventing pneumonia and influenza remains important.
