ABSTRACT

The spectrum of nosocomially acquired respiratory infections may be schematically divided into two settings: nosocomial pneumonia outside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), either severe1 or mild-to-moderate, and nosocomial pneumonia acquired in the ICU, usually in mechanically ventilated patients. The issue of nosocomial pneumonia outside the ICU is specifically discussed in Chapter 42.
