Carbon accumulation in the vegetation and soil is assumed to be one of several possible ways to mitigate the increasing concentration of atmospheric CO2. Previous studies indicate that accumulation of SOC in post-mining soils is rather high and that these soils could play an important role in efforts to capture CO2 (Akala and Lal 2001). There is, however, still little information about the relationship between primary production and soil organic matter accumulation at post-mining sites.
