ABSTRACT

Looking at the various environmental challenges that the cement and concrete industry is facing, we see that some of these challenges are local in nature, and that they can only be solved locally-some of them have regional solutions, and some, for example, energy and emission challenges, are global in nature, challenges, and solutions. However, even with global challenges, the possible effects and resource availability of the tools to improve the situation vary considerably from one place to another. Also, the economical realities and local traditions and technology levels add to the variability and complexity of the solution equation. It is therefore important that we have both a wide number of alternatives in the toolbox and the necessary modesty in striving for more sustainable solutions when we attack the problems. One of the most important intentions of this book has been to try to contribute to such understanding and versatility.
