ABSTRACT

The applicability of existing federal and state policies and regulations as well as oversight by regulatory bodies varies by species used and research situation. In the United States, governmental oversight of the use of animals in biomedical research is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through its Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and Regulations (AWR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (aka PHS Policy), a product of the Health Research Extension Act (HREA) of 1985.
