ABSTRACT

Anxiety disorders encompass a range of disorders in which the primary symptom is anxiety that is not secondary to a major psychiatric illness (such as depression) and not induced by substance abuse (ICD-10). Symptoms of anxiety may be broadly classified as follows:

cognitive, that is, apprehension (worry about the future, feeling on edge and difficulty in concentrating)

motor, as in restless fidgeting, tension headaches, trembling and inability to relax

autonomic, as in dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, tachycardia, tachypnoea and epigastric discomfort.
