ABSTRACT

The motor, secretory, and absorptive functions of the upper gastrointestinal tract remain remarkably intact with healthy aging, although aging is associated with an increase in comorbidities that affect the gut, including the use of medications with adverse gastrointestinal effects, and neoplastic disorders. In contrast to the relative preservation of motor and secretory function, visceral perception diminishes even with healthy aging, possibly as a result of neuronal loss in the myenteric plexus.
