ABSTRACT

Chronic venous diseases like varicose veins and post-thrombotic syndrome are very common in the general population.1 In earlier studies reported prevalences for varicose veins ranged from 1 to 73% in females and 2 to 56% in males and for chronic venous insufficiency from 1 to 40% in females and from 1 to 17% in males.1-4 The results vary according to different geographic region, and also by the methods used for evaluation. In Western countries varicose veins are present in 25-33% of female and 10-20% of male adults. The incidence of varicose veins per year in the Framingham study was 2.6% in women and 1.9% in men.5 The prevalence of skin changes was reported to vary between 3 and 13% in the population, and the prevalence of active and healed ulcers to vary between 1 and 2.7%.1
