ABSTRACT

During the perinatal period the infant-especially if bom prematurely-may be confronted with a variety of life-threatening hematological problems: hem orrhage, hemolysis, anemia of prematurity, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and more. When considering therapeutic approaches with cytokines toward these disorders one must take into account the fact that hematopoiesis in the fetus, in the preterm, and in the neonate term has unique features and differs greatly from hematopoiesis in older children and adults.
