ABSTRACT

In clinical practice for children, such precise measurements cannot be achieved. Therefore, diarrhea in infancy and early childhood may be defined as an increase in stool frequency associated with a change in the nature of the stool-that is, a change to loose or watery stools. It must be remembered that the normal breast-fed infant may pass frequent loose stools. Yet when a breastfed infant gets diarrhea, there is a departure from the normal stool pattern, with increase of volume and frequency.
