ABSTRACT
The act of breathing is accomplished by a group of skeletal muscles in the proximity of the chest wall that are collectively known as the respiratory muscles. Functionally, they are classified as the inspiratory and the expiratory muscles. The respiratory muscles are also recruited during other nonrespiratory acts such as speech, cough, posture, and expulsive maneuvers (Detroyer and Loring, 1986).
