ABSTRACT
This chapter looks in detail at Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. We are particularly interested in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, where multiple attackers work together to disable a system. Either individual nodes or communications channels can be disabled to stage these attacks. Recently DoS attacks have been attempted against the Internet domain name system (DNS) infrastructure, Microsoft, the White House, and Amazon.com.
