ABSTRACT

Interactions between HM pollutants and soil fractions leading to removal of the HMs from the porewater are of considerable interest and concern. The concern is with respect to the subsequent release of these metals from the soil solids (particles). This desorption process, which can be triggered by many events and circumstances, will permit the metals to be mobile, i.e., transported in the substrate. While the availability and mobility of desorbed pollutants falls under the category of environmental mobility, the desorption distribution coefficients will not be similar to the adsorption

distribution coefficients, i.e., k

k

. This will be discussed in greater detail in the subsequent portions of this chapter.
