ABSTRACT

Each of the above quotes contains advice for and warnings about going outside for help. It is very difficult to discuss going outside for assistance in development, however, without clearly understanding the following terms:

• Outsourcing • Joint ventures • Partnerships • Hiring of consultants

They all describe working relationships, some without contractual obligations, with an outside resource, and all have similar features in practice. Closely allied with these are customer-supplier relationships (a form of joint venture) and copacker relationships. These too, have contractual arrangements and frequently play a role in new product development when the supplier and copacker provide their skill and expertise to the design and development of the process.
