ABSTRACT
It is generally conceded that biotic reactions involving microorganisms are of major signi cance in determining the fate and persistence of organic compounds in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The role of higher biota in carrying out important transformations is addressed in Part 2 of this chapter.
