ABSTRACT

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter biosynthesized in the human body from the amino acid tryptophan. Within the brain, serotonin is associated with a variety of important functions, including those that control appetite, memory, sleep, and learning. For a long time serotonin has been associated with sleep: in the earliest study, the manipulation of the serotonin system was associated with sleep or wake behavior, and it has been considered as the ‘sleep’ or the ‘wake’ neurotransmitter.1
