ABSTRACT

Tree nuts were long perceived as an unhealthy food due to their high fat content and caloric value. The energy content of nuts ranges from 23.7 to 29.3 kJ/g and the fat content is ~ 0.51-0.73 g/g. Nuts that are higher in energy are higher in fat. However, clinical trials and epidemiological studies have established that nuts contribute to improved health and well-being in humans (Willet 2001) (Figure 9.1).
