ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, we studied algebra with an emphasis on the concept of an algebraic structure. As mentioned in the preface, the term “algebraic structure,” though not uncommon, does not have a mathematically precise definition that would make it possible to say whether something is an algebraic structure or not. Categories formalize and generalize what we previously called (for lack of a better term) an algebraic structure.
