ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the basic elements necessary to fit and use a straight-line regression model. The act of searching for and finding underground supplies of water using nothing more than a divining rod is commonly known as “dowsing.” Although widely regarded among scientists a superstitious relic from medieval times, dowsing remains popular in folklore and there are individuals who claim to have this mysterious skill. The engineer used derived empirical formulas to calculate the mass of the spill after a period of time ranging from 0 to 60 minutes. Accurate measurements of rainfall are critical for many hydrological and meteorological projects. Two standard methods of monitoring rainfall use rain gauges and weather radar. Both, however, can be contaminated by human and environmental interference. For most economic and scientific time series, there is a tendency for the regression residuals to have positive and negative runs over time.
