Abstract. A new photoconductivity (PC) study of undoped GaAs/ AlGaAs quantum wires (QWRs) is carried out measuring the PC along the wires direction. The PC spectrum reveals several peak structures, related to the QWRs. This suggestion is confirmed by the observed dependence of the spectrum on the exciting light polarisation and by photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation measurements on a similar sample. A long pre-illumination of the sample with infrared light (hv = 1.18 eV) is found to reduce considerably the substrate related background in the PC spectrum, which makes the QWR structures better prnounced.
