Investigation of grain boundaries in LPS aluminas by TEM

Abstract. Hot pressed alumina samples containing 5wt% calcia and silica additions in 2:1 and 10:1 molar ratios respectively were studied in detail using both scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. Grain size, secondary crystalline phases and the compositions of amorphous films at grain boundaries and triple pockets have been characterised and related to mechanical properties.
