ABSTRACT

A A C has been used for many years in areas subject to seismic action. Buildings which consist fully or partly of A A C have in general terms shown good resistance to earthquake forces in practice. Some of the material characteristics of A A C may explain the good behaviour. The light weight of A A C reduces the seismic forces in common with some other materials. The fact that A A C can be used in most structural parts of low-rise buildings makes a high degree of symmetry possible and provides deformation compatibility. In addition, the non-combustible and fire-resisting nature of the A A C material is an advantage against fires commonly associated with earthquakes.
