ABSTRACT

Organic soils, e.g. peats and mucks, that were formed in-place as a result of the accumulation of chemically-decomposed plant residues in shallow ponded areas,

are termed cumulose soils. Both peat and muck are highly organic; the fibres of unoxidized plant remains are still visible in peat whereas they are mostly oxidized in the older muck soils. Whilst easily identified on the surface these soils are often encountered at depths below the surface in glaciated areas.
