Nuclear energy entered public consciousness with the use of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki to bring a speedy end to the Second World War. The sheer scale of destruction made possible by this development and the feared consequences of large-scale fall-out following a nuclear war have been a matter of world-wide concern ever since-not least to the civil nuclear industry.
