ABSTRACT

Biofouling, colonization of surfaces by organic molecules and organisms is a complex and pervasive issue that adversely impacts society at levels that include, esthetics, biomedicine, households, power generation and all marine industries. Present effective commercial solutions to fouling involve mechanical cleaning, the use of metal biocides, and strong oxi dants. Over time, the benefits from existing fouling control measures are being overshadowed by adverse environmental impacts resulting in societal and governmental pressure to find alternatives (Alberte et al. 1992, Rittschof 2000). Biofouling and its prevention are global issues.
