ABSTRACT

Introduction Sugarcane is one of the few crops to provide commercial quantity of food, fibre and fuel. It is grown in more than 80 countries throughout the tropics and sub-tropics. In some of these countries, sugarcane is the principal source of revenue, e.g. in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mauritius. The main product of sugarcane is, of course, sugar, the name given to crystals of sucrose. Later, beet sugar was developed from sugar beet, a crop of temperate region.
